Landscape Architecture

WMC's Landscape Architecture Studio  independently performs a full range of services from concept development through construction administration. The studio focuses on the design of public space, streetscapes, public parks, athletic facilities, green roofs (intensive and extensive), and the integration of LID design strategies into the urban built environment. The studios designs are driven by form, function, public interaction and a drive to promote natural processes in the landscape. All elements within the design, hardscape or softscape and locations at grade or on structure are viewed as important components of how the final landscape functions and are perceived by the user. WMC’s Landscape Architects believe this can only be attained by great collaborations with architects, engineers, community members and other design professionals.

Civil Engineering

WMC offers a full spectrum of engineering services  including design for grading, drainage, stormwater management, water, sewer, roads, paving, parking, transportation networks, and sedimentation and erosion control. The accumulated experience is national and international in scope and includes a significant number of projects on institutional and educational campus type developments. WMC is equally aware of the special nature and unique requirements of developmental and rehabilitation projects within environmentally sensitive areas.
Stormwater Management Techniques
WMC has provided stormwater management and erosion and sediment controls for almost every project it has completed over the last 25+ years for projects throughout Washington, DC and the tri-state area.  The total number of stormwater quantity and quality controls design by WMC exceeds 3,000 and has allowed the firm to gain expertise in all types of stormwater facilities.  The WMC expertise is enhanced by constant educational updates, as well as presentations by WMC staff to regional industry associations.

The variety of techniques utilized by WMC to address specific project requirements in urban areas include vegetated green roofs, sand beds and sand filters; detention tanks, pipes, and inlets; and tree island reservoirs

In suburban and rural area techniques include wet and dry detention ponds, biofiltration trenches and ponds, bioremediation areas, and grass swales.
Low Impact Design (LID)
LID has evolved over the years and has become the standard for stormwater  design.  LID covers many items where the intent is to prevent the moderate storm runoff from leaving the site.  The possible design approach for a project may include ground recharge through infiltration, reuse such as cisterns for irrigation or gray water use, and filtration such as green roofs and bio-swales.  Moreover, throughout a variety of projects, WMC has demonstrated the ability to implement LID practices in public space, which satisfies VDOT & DDOT’s  LID design guidelines.  These practices include permeable sidewalks, bioretention planters adjacent to the roadway, LID tree planters, and continuous structural soil designs.  Every project is evaluated to determine the LID impacts, which are practical and engineered for results.

Most importantly, WMC has an advantage of having an in-house civil and landscape architecture services.  This  provides the opportunity for extensive coordination on LID facilities, enable systems to function properly, while also being aesthetically pleasing .
