National Park Service – Arlington House Comfort Station
Arlington, VA
Arlington House Comfort Station is located across the Potomac River and adjacent to the historic Arlington National Cemetery. WMC assisted the design team by providing surveying and extensive civil engineering services in support of a renovation of various buildings on this 28 acre site.
Lake Anne Neighborhood Park
Reston, VA
WMC provided full civil engineering services in efforts to redevelop and revitalize Reston Association’s Lake Anne Community Swimming Pool into a neighborhood park.The existing recreation facility on the 1.71 acre site included two tennis courts, an asphalt multi-purpose court, a swimming pool, a tot pool and a bath house. The site was redeveloped to include one tennis court, two tot lots, a sand pit, volleyball area, a basketball half court and a picnic pavilion with restrooms.
Plans were developed to meet required standards for Fairfax county DEM approval and for approval through the Reston Association Parks and Recreation Department, the Reston Association Design Review Board, and the Reston Citizens Association Planning and Zoning.
National Park Service – Brawner Farm
Manassas, VA
WMC is providing civil engineering services for the design of a new restroom facility located at Manassas National Battlefield Park’s Brawner Farm in Manassas, Virginia. The restroom facility is estimated to receive 13,500 visitors annually.
The design of the newly prefabricated concrete restroom facility incorporates a connecting ADA compliant sidewalk, stormwater management facilities, a potable well, and septic system. Stormwater management design will consist of a rain garden constructed to blend in with existing surface features and meet new federal EISA Section 438 requirements. Requirements for well design were determined through the Virginia Department of Health, Office of Drinking Water. The septic system will incorporate an alternative drip-field design to integrate with the existing soil conditions in order to meet the septic system demand. In addition, WMC is responsible for the design or the coordination of the design of all site utilities.
Services also included coordinating with local agencies such as Virginia Department of Health, Prince William County Health District and National Park Service in order to inspect, determine, and document appropriate locations for the restroom facility, and proposed well and septic areas.
National Park Service – Petersen House
Washington, DC
WMC is providing civil engineering and surveying services for the Petersen House located across the street from Ford’s Theatre. The Petersen House is a plain red brick three-story with one sub-level and is known as the house where President Lincoln was tended to before his death. The Petersen House is now utilized as a historic museum.
The Elipse
Washington, DC
WMC provided extensive site engineering and landscape design for the rehabilitation of various elements of the Ellipse. The purpose of this project was to rehabilitate the Ellipse to a condition appropriate with its national importance as an element of the President's Park. In particular, the layout and design of new concrete paver walks to replace aging concrete walks within the Ellipse Park as well as those on the perimeter roadways of 15th Street, 17th Street, and Constitution Avenue. WMC services included extensive rehabilitation of utilities and irrigation, re-grading to improve drainage, rehabilitation of turf while preserving trees, monuments and other elements of historic significance as well as maintaining monuments utilized for annual and seasonal events at this important National Park.
Washington Monument
Washington, DC
WMC provided complete survey and design services for two major projects at the Washington Monument: the Physical Security project, and the Visitor’s Center. WMC completed a topographic and utility survey of the entire site and designed all below grade improvements in conjunction with the surface improvements to provide additional physical security, and repairs to the Washington Monument. Work encompassed 64 acres and extended from 15th to 17th Streets, and from Constitution to Independence Avenues.
National Mall Turf and Tree Restoration
Washington, DC
WMC is providing civil engineering and survey services to improve the conditions at turf areas of the National Mall. With 3,000 special events per year on the Mall, keeping trees and turf alive and healthy is a daunting challenge. This project is part of a multi-year planning effort aimed at improving the health and sustainability of the National Mall. The project site limits of the National Mall are from 1st to 14th Streets and from Madison to Jefferson Drives. It is estimated that this project will be complete in 2012.
Korean War Veterans Memorial
Washington, DC
WMC managed the site planning and design of the highly visible memorial. WMC was responsible for overseeing the final design tasks that included the stabilization and precompaction of the site with the use of deep wick drains due to poor soil conditions. Subsurface utility designations and substantial field excavations were also completed to investigate and utilize a documented 50 year old storm drainage system abandoned 30 years ago. WMC supervised the geometric layout and adjustments based on a pre-established project grid, earthwork balance, special paving, grading, utility systems, stormwater management analysis plus specialized stormwater overflow conveyance.
East Potomac Park Golf Course & Driving Range
Washington, DC
Just beyond the historic monuments lies East Potomac Golf Course which is part of the National Park. The site includes a retail shop, snack bar, putting greens, three practice holes, and a two-tiered, 100-stall driving range. WMC assisted the design team by providing surveying and extensive civil engineering services in support of a renovation of this 300+ acre peninsula.
Mosaic Park
Arlington, Virginia
WMC is part of the design team in conjunction with the design and re-development of the Mosaic Park site located at the northwest corner of N. Pollard Street and N. 5th Rd in Arlington County, Virginia. WMC is providing civil engineering and land surveying services for this project.
Specific scope of services includes boundary, topographic and utility surveys; demolition to include abandonment of existing service laterals, stormwater management design, sediment and erosion control design, sanitary and storm sewer design, and water connection design for the water feature.
