Washington Tennis & Education Foundation
Washington, DC
In effort to accommodate children in underserved neighborhoods of Washington DC, Washington Tennis & Education Foundation has decided to build a tennis facility that is located on a seven acre Southeast Washington DC site that enables their students to play year around in an indoor facility. The site contains six indoor hard courts and nine outdoor courts, 1,500 sq ft community room, five classrooms, weight/exercise room with locker rooms, and staff space.
WMC provided landscape architecture and civil engineering services for this project. Scope of services for this project included, site layout, grading, terracing, as well as pedestrian and vehicular flow. Careful layout of the pedestrian paths is an important factor for this project in order to allow accessible access to all parts of the facility on this site consisting of great elevation change. An entry plaza was designed for use as a drop off and gathering zone that can support emergency vehicle access when required. The integration of bio-retention planting is also being implemented to reduce the amount of stormwater leaving the site.

William Ramsay Recreation Center
Alexandria, VA
WMC participated in this project on a site measuring 16.9 acres located in Alexandria in Virginia. The scope of work included the design of a new Community Recreation Center and the expansion of the original facility located adjacent to the William Ramsey Elementary School. The new larger facility was designed to accommodates a larger number of community residents and offer a more diversified program. This one story recreation/community center addition replaces the existing recreation center and consists of a gym, fitness room, dance room, computer room, art room, multi-purpose room, and a game room. The outdoor facilities include two hard courts and a playground. A “drop-off” driveway was added with two adjacent handicapped parking spaces, as well as, twelve additional parking spaces in the main parking lot.
The new 18,150 sq ft facility was designed to have separate, water, storm, sanitary and electric utilities from the existing school and connecting to the existing utilities along Sanger Avenue. A stormceptor was incorporated to satisfy the requirements for stormwater management quantity controls and waiver calculations were supplied for stormwater management quantity control.
